Not all bumpers are created equal. Here's why your next bumper plates should be Fringe Sport bumpers:
Bumper plates come in a few standard sizes, and are sold in pounds but include kilogram conversions. Fringe Sport economy bumpers are sold by the pound. Here is a chart with rough pound and kilogram weights:
|Bumper Weight||Best Weight For:|
|10 lbs ~ 5 kg||Great for teaching or learning Olympic lifts.|
|15 lbs ~ 7 kg||Same uses as the 10s, but this offers greater durability at only a slightly heavier weight.|
|25 lbs ~ 11 kg||A very popular weight as they are very durable and throwing these on an Oly bar gives you 95 pounds (Fran Rx).|
|35 lbs ~ 16 kg||A great size for adding more weight on the bar.|
|45 lbs ~ 20 kg||The most popular size for gyms - 45's really let you load up your bar and make some serious strength gains.|
|55 lbs ~ 25 kg||When the 45s just don't cut it, we have 55lb bumpers to add some serious weight to the bar.|
A bumper plate is a weight plate for Olympic bars that is made almost entirely of rubber (with a steel or brass collar in the middle that accepts an Olympic bar).
The "end state" of the Olympic lifts is overhead or at the shoulder. Many lifters drop the weights from overhead. Since bumper plates are almost entirely rubber, being dumped from the shoulder or overhead will not damage the weights, bar, floor, bystanders, the lifter, etc...
Additionally, bumpers are popular in the functional fitness community since many athletes practice the Olympic lifts, and other functional fitness exercises (thrusters, presses) end overhead.
Finally, bumper plates are also great for garage gym use- the rubber construction is much quieter than traditional metal construction.
Love them so far, just waiting on the 10's and 25's to be shipped!
These plates are extremely accurate. I know they claim to be within 10 grams of claimed weight, but I really didn't expect them to be that accurate. When I weighed them out they are all within a tenth of a pound of their claimed weight. I have even started using these for benching instead of my steel plates, because they were all a couple of pounds light. They also have a nice dead bounce and they are good looking plates.
Great price and shipped quickly. Thanks!
These bumpers are solid - every bit as durable as the black bumpers and easy to recognize!
I purchased a set of the 500lb bumper plates in September 2015 after researching quality and pricing of different brands. I would rate these a 5 star on the quality but I can only give them a 1 star because of the terrible smell they put off. When I first received my order about a week after purchase I noticed a smell. I read that all bumpers can have a light smell because they are rubber. I was fine with that. About a month after purchase I decided to move them into my gym because I completed the construction. The next day when I went to my gym the smell was unbearable so I proceeded to call fringesports and the person on the other end told me that they needed to air out, which I have done for about a month already. There was also an oily substance that I had continue to wipe off with a rag, it was like it was seeping out of them. Back to the smell, I figured that a month would have been long enough, right? Well it has been 8 months now and the smell is just about as bad as its been since day one. I am not able to store them inside the gym because of the smell, so I store them right outside the door which is not convenient at all. If I get within about 5 feet of them outside you can smell them. Imagine going to the gym and having to walk outside to get your bumper plates anytime you train. I would definitely not reorder these.
