THE DANE

The Dane features a half rack in the front with a commercial grade functional trainer built into the rack. The combination of squat rack & functional trainer in one provides a smaller footprint (and lower price point) than two stand alone units. With a length of only 60” from front to back, The Dane is extremely space efficient for all the functionality it brings to the table. The squat rack is sturdy, commercial grade, and includes a pair of low-profile spotter arms for performing squats outside the rack. The pulley system is also highly adjustable, allowing you to customize the angle, range of motion, and resistance for each exercise.

COMMERCIAL GRADE PULLEY SYSTEM

The Dane features dual 160lb weight stacks with a 1:1 pulley ratio, so 100lbs feels like 100lbs.

The Dane 160lb weight stack.

The key benefit of a 1:1 pulley ratio compared to a 2:1 pulley ratio is that you get the same resistance with half the weight on the weight stack. So, it takes up less space but can still provide the same amount of resistance. The increased access to resistance also makes it less likely that you'll outgrow the weight stack and need to spend more money on additional weights down the road.

The pulley cables reach 53" outside the rack and operate on a 180 degree swivel, giving you plenty of room for cable work outside the rack. With a height of 93", The Dane provides plenty of reach for high & low cable positions, like lat pull-downs and low rows.

The trolleys have nylon rollers with upgraded ball bearings that allow them to easily glide up and down the upright, even with just 1 hand.

The Dane upgraded ball bearings that allow them to easily glide up and down the upright, even with just 1 hand.

THE RACK

Don't let the pulley system steal the show, the rack portion of The Dane is just as enticing. Made from 11-gauge steel, The Dane features a commercial grade squat rack with a 1,200lb weight capacity. The uprights are 3" X 3" with 1" holes.

The Dane comes with a pair of extension feet which increase the stability at the base of the rack while squatting. It also includes a pair of low-profile spotter arms for squatting outside the rack. The upgraded sandwich j-cups have a thick lining of UHMW plastic so there's never steel on steel contact with your barbell.

Both the inside and the outside of each upright is sprayed with a thorough layer of high-quality powder-coat, making it extremely rust resistant, especially in more humid climates.

Fringe Sport The Dane 1.0, Half Rack Functional Trainer Review

The Dane 1.0!

For the money I spent on the Dane I am overall happy with it! The functional trainer squeals a bit when I use it. (One of the guide rods is a little textured). It doesn’t cause the cable to not feel smooth it’s just more annoying than anything. Because the 1:1 ratio the pulleys weren’t very smooth so after some tinkering I converted the Dane over to a 2:1 and it feels a bit better now. I’ve had to tinker a lot to get the pulleys to feel smooth and it’s still not perfect. The J- cups and spotter arm holes don’t line up with my rack so i can’t secure it with a hitch pin. (Im sure fringe sport would make it right if I reached out). With all that out of the way I love how heavy duty the rack is. The trolleys slide up and down the uprights very smoothly. It wasn’t super hard to put together and with some tinkering I am happy with the money I spent vs what I got. I think with the Dane 2.0 all these issues are fixed so hopefully the second round of customers will have nothing but good things to say!

Would I recommend this product, kinda.

It has all the potential, and it's a great product, but needs options to upgrade to multigrip pull up bar, premium pulleys and bearings, and weight stack. I should have waited for the Dane 2. I am now wondering if I can upgrade my Dane 1 in the future.

No-Brainer for the Money, but not Perfect

I'll get my overall opinion out of the way. For the price, this setup is absolutely worth the mild annoyances many users may encounter. Customer service is also fantastic, which Fringe is well-known for! For anyone that likes to read long reviews, I'll break down my detailed reviews by shipping, assembly, and actual usage in the following paragraphs. My setup is a little different from the normal Dane, that's the wonderful expandability and the beauty of a 3x3 1-in hole rack. As you can see in my photos, I expanded the normal 4-post Dane 1.0 to a 6-post rack. More on this in the following assembly portion. I pre-ordered my Dane 1.0 at the end of August 2024 and received it around December 2024. Long wait certainly, but that was communicated ahead of time, and Fringe's customer support was prompt and forthcoming every time I inquired about anything. The rack was well packaged and survived the shipping with just minor damages to the packaging, but no damage to the internal components due to shipping. If anything, the packaging might be slightly overly cautious as I spent well over 2 hours just unpacking the long awaited Dane 1.0, lol.... The assembly process was not easy, neither was the provided instruction booklet overly helpful, but that was expected for a system of this complexity. I'd recommend at least 2 competent people for installation considering how heavy duty and bulky the parts are, but I was able to put the rack together without too much headache. Overall assembly process took about 4 hours by myself. I did find a damaged pulley during my installation, and it took Fringe only 5 days to get the replacement parts to my door. The provided tools are minimal, but sufficient to accomplish the assembly. However, I do recommend Fringe to include a smaller profile wrenches for the lower bolts on the bottom crossmembers. I added 2 pairs of 30-in crossmembers and a pair of 90-in black Osprey uprights to expand the Dane 1.0 to a 6-post rack, which allows me to have a true power rack as well as a half-rack with a functional trainer built-in concurrently. However, I should note that the Osprey uprights are NOT a perfect fit with the Dane 1.0. The starting position of the lowest hole on the Osprey upright is about 1/4" higher that that on the Dane uprights, meaning the Osprey uprights are NOT truly compatible with the Dane 1.0. My basement gym's concrete slab was also sloped, which further complicated the fit, but I managed to resolve the issue by cutting into my flooring material and shimming the Osprey uprights. Not sure if Fringe is aware of the differences between the Osprey line and the Dane as I was told otherwise when inquiring about the compatibility with a Fringe customer service rep. Now the fun stuff -- actually using the Dane 1.0! It's pretty much as advertised and an unbeatable value! The Dane 1.0 is already one of the best prices available outside of testing your luck on Alibaba, and Fringe sweetens the deal with the occasional sales and fantastic customer service and warranty. The 1-1 pulley ratio is not the best option for everyone and it starts heavy and requires "big" weight jumps when increasing weight, but that's the compromise I'm willing to make for a truly heavy stack and make every dollar count! Great for heavy lat-pulldowns and low rows. Another commonly mentioned disadvantage of the 1-1 pulley ratio is the limited range of motion, but I find that to be overly critical and inaccurate. Unless you are over 6'-3" or have abnormally long arms, the Dane 1.0 has more than sufficient ROM for most movements. As for the few movements that you need a little more cable length, there are plenty of workarounds, such as chain or cable extensions. If you want to do chest flies standing 4 feet away from the rack, you just need another 4 feet of cable length, not extra ROM. The top weight plate on the weight stack does not have a hole for the selector pin, which is mildly annoying, but easily remedied by a 3-D printed pin holder. Fringe is also addressing that issue with the Dane 2.0 release. Additionally, Fringe is addressing both of these items in the Dane 2.0 release. The pulleys are not as smooth as some of the higher end competitor offerings that cost significantly more, but more than serviceable. The trolleys with the rollers on the other hand are very smooth and easy to use. The rest of the rack is very well built and functions as well as any 3x3 11-gauge rack, and the clear-coat finish in particular is gorgeous! One minor complaint on the included pull-up bar: the powder-coating is a bit too slick and I'd love to see the option for a multi-grip pullup bar. Lastly the j-cups and spotter arms can use some improvement in quality. To summarize, the Dane 1.0 clearly has its quirks, and some of the design decisions are intended for gym owners with specific interests in mind. For the right person, this rack is about as good as it gets for the price, except for the upcoming Dane 2.0, of course ;)

Exceptional Quality and Outstanding Customer Service

I recently purchased the Dane Half Rack Functional Trainer from Fringe Sport, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the quality and performance of the equipment. The build is sturdy, and it offers a wide range of functionalities that have significantly enhanced my workout routine. What truly sets this experience apart, though, is the outstanding customer service. I encountered an issue with the initial set of cables, but Ryne and the team at Fringe Sport were incredibly responsive and helpful. They quickly provided the correct replacement parts, and even facilitated in-person assistance to ensure everything was perfect. The dedication to customer satisfaction is evident, and I highly recommend both the Dane Half Rack Functional Trainer and Fringe Sport for anyone looking to upgrade their home gym with top-tier equipment and exceptional support. Keep up the great work, Fringe Sport!
