Garage Gym of the Week: Daniel Powers
- What’s your name? Daniel Powers
- How old are you? 24
- Do you have an IG handle or website you’d like linked? My Insta is @danpow, my website is ww.utzy.com. Utzy is a supplement company a co-founded about a year ago. Our focus is on creating premium grade everyday health supplements.
- Tell us a little bit about yourself: I’m passionate about a few things. My first is my faith in my savior Jesus Christ. Through my relationship with Christ I am truly able to love others. Second, I love the health and wellness! My dad has worked in the health and wellness industry my whole life, I kind of absorbed his passion for healthy living and entrepreneurship. Third, I love entrepreneurship. I’ve seen my dad’s example of how to create and run a company and that has inspired me to do the same. This lead me to start Utzy! All that being said, my days mostly consist of work, working out, and reading self-improvement books. I love it!
- How would you describe your training style (CrossFit, Olympic Weightlifting, etc.)? Crossfit, though I am currently training with more of a Powerlifting focus to gain raw strength. Finishing up a couple month cycle of 5/3/1 then I’ll be adding WOD’s back in.
- How would you describe your fitness/strength level, currently? My strength is at an all time high (due to focusing on Powerlifting), but my conditioning is pretty ‘meh’ right now.
- What are your fitness/strength goals? Figuring that out right now. I’m peaking to hit a #400 back squat within the next few weeks, after that I want to get back into competing in Crossfit. Getting a top podium spot at a local comp would be awesome.
- Describe your garage gym. Pretty basic. I have lots of weights, a good bar, a squat rack, and some dumbbells + rings. Oh, and someone just gave me an atlas stone (#115), love that thing. Nothing too fancy but it’s enough equipment to kick my butt ever day.
- Who works out in your garage gym? My wife and I work out together on the weekdays. On the weekdays we’ll have friends come over and we’ll all throw down together (usually we hit some heavy lifts, then do some sort of fast, spicy WOD).
- Why did you build a garage gym? The CF gym in my area had gone through multiple owners within the past few years and I was kind of getting tired of the instability. Plus my schedule has gotten very busy ever since I launched my company, so having flexibility for my workout times was very important for me.
- What’s your favorite piece of equipment in your garage? My Fringe Sport Bomba barbell is definitely my favorite piece of equipment. Love barbell lifts (squats, deads, oly, you name it!)
- What piece of equipment was a waste? I had a buddy (who was in shop class at the time) build me a homemade Prowler. It’s terrible! Doesn’t work at all and it’s super awkward. Basically it’s a huge pile of half welded metal that sits in the corner of my gym. Used it like once.
- What’s the next piece of equipment you’re going to get? I’m looking to add more WOD’s into my daily training, so I’ve been shopping around for Crossfit “basics" (Kettlebells, Heavy Dumbells, Wallballs, etc….)
- Any dream piece of equipment? Quite a few! A rig would be amazing for the gym. I’d love to have enough stations for multiple friends to workout at the same time. Also, I really want Farmer Carry Handles, such a great piece of equipment!
- How did you build your garage gym? Over time. Some people have given me free gear because they know that I love to workout (someone gave me a Hack Squat Machine! LOL, such a random piece of equipment in my gym). Lately I’ve been looking online at Fringe Sport and on Craigslist quite a bit. Between those two places, I’ll finish getting all of the gear that I need.
- Do you have any tips for anyone else looking to build a garage gym? Start slowly and make sure that each piece is something that you really want (and that you’ll really use). Buy from companies that you trust (and that value you).
