What is the difference between a squat rack and cage?

A squat rack and a cage, also known as a power cage or power rack, are both types of equipment used for weightlifting and strength training.

A squat rack is a simple stand with two adjustable bar catches that hold the weight bar at the desired height for performing squats. It provides stability and safety by preventing the weight bar from falling or rolling off during the exercise. Squat racks are generally more compact and take up less space compared to cages.

On the other hand, a cage is a larger and more versatile piece of equipment. It consists of four vertical posts connected by horizontal bars, creating a cage-like structure. Cages usually have multiple adjustable bar catches at different heights, allowing for a wider range of exercises such as squats, bench presses, shoulder presses, and pull-ups. Cages also often come with additional features like dip bars and cable attachments, making them suitable for a variety of exercises and training routines.

The main advantage of a cage over a squat rack is the increased safety it provides. The enclosed structure of the cage allows for the use of safety pins or spotter arms to catch the weight bar in case of failure or fatigue during a lift. This makes it a preferred choice for heavy lifting or when training alone.

While the the squat rack and cage serve all kinds of weightlifting exercises, the cage offers more versatility and safety features. The choice between them depends on factors such as training goals, available space, and budget.

If space is an issue such as height, width or depth of the gym area, then squat racks generally take up less room.  Squat Racks Under 7 Feet
